Why in news?
United States has become the first nation of the world who officially withdraws from the Paris Climate Agreement on November 4, 2020.
However the United States can rejoin it if the President announces Joining, Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Joe Biden has spoken about joining it After Becoming President.
Some important key points About the Paris Climate Agreement:
The 21st Conference of Parties (COP 21) under the UNFCCC was first held in Paris in 2015.
It was agreed to keep global temperature below 2 degree Celsius before pre-industrialization level. It came into force from 4 November 2016.
In this conference, various countries including developing countries have also announced their INDCs to reduce carbon emissions.
Under the Marrakesh Action Plan adopted at COP 22 in 2016, after the Paris Agreement, Developed countries have also agreed to support an annual fund of $ 100 billion from 2020.
However, after Donald Trump became president, his government decided to separate America from it.
(After November 2020) It is important to note that America is the second largest producer of greenhouse gases.
Any country can apply for separation from this agreement only after 3 years of its implementation.
Thus, the United States applied for separation on 4 November 2019 and a year later separated automatically in November 2020.
