What is World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ?

   WIPO is a global platform for intellectual property services, policy, information, and collaboration. It is a self-financing agency of the United Nations. WIPO, established in 1967, is dedicated to the growth of innovation and creativity through a balanced and effective international intellectual property system for the economic, social, and cultural development of all countries. The Global Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), with 191 member states, is a United Nations agency dedicated to the use of the intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs, etc.) as a medium to encourage innovation and creativity. Controller of India. The Auditor-General is the external auditor of the Global Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Geneva since June 2018.

There are two main categories of intellectual property -

1. Copyright and enclosure rights (includes literary, artistic, musical, cinematographic and audio-visual works), and

2. Industrial Estate (It includes inventions, scientific discoveries, industrial design, trademarks, service marks made in all areas of human enterprise and

Commercial names and designations).

The three major areas of activities of WIPO are-

1. Progressive development of international intellectual property law

2. Global conservation systems and services, and;

3. Support for development.
